U.S. Ag Labor Group Seeks Insights on Farm Workforce Challenges

U.S. Ag Labor Group Seeks Insights on Farm Workforce Challenges

The U.S. Agricultural Labor Working Group, recently established, is on a mission: to understand the trials and tribulations tied to agricultural employment. As part of this initiative, they're reaching out to farm employers, processors, and workers, urging them to participate in an important survey.

Michigan Farm Bureau's John Kran, representing the bureau at the national legislative front, emphasizes the importance of sharing the challenges faced by Michigan's farms due to the H-2A program. He believes that sharing these real-world issues is crucial for bringing about meaningful change over time.

It's crucial not to confuse this survey with the USDA’s Farm Labor Survey. Assuring potential participants, the working group has clarified that survey responses will be kept anonymous and used only in an aggregated format.

The formation of this working group in June came with clear objectives. Top leaders like Glenn “GT” Thompson and David Scott have shed light on the group's mission. Their aim is multi-pronged: They want feedback, especially about the H-2A visa program, an interim report pinpointing the program's flaws, and eventually, a comprehensive report suggesting improvements.

Recognizing the common labor issues faced by producers, the Committee on Agriculture aims to take responsibility, focusing on solutions rather than getting caught up in the political talk of the past.
