The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expanding its collaboration with Native Community Development Financial Institutions (NCDFIs) to enhance opportunities for homeownership among Native Americans living on Tribal lands in eight states. Roger Glendenning, Acting Under Secretary for Rural Development at USDA, announced this initiative, highlighting the importance of well-built, energy-efficient, and affordable housing for the well-being of rural and Tribal communities.
USDA has a longstanding commitment to assisting people in rural and Tribal communities with housing needs, dating back to 1949. Their partnership with NCDFIs is a continuation of this legacy, aimed at promoting economic security and prosperity for individuals in Tribal communities throughout the United States.
In the state of Michigan, the Lake Superior Community Development Corporation is receiving a $500,000 loan to finance the construction of five homes.
Brandon Fewins, USDA Rural Development State Director for Michigan, emphasized USDA's dedication to building new partnerships and finding innovative ways to help rural residents achieve the goal of homeownership.
The funding for this initiative is provided through the Native CDFI Relending Demonstration Program, which offers loans to NCDFIs to further lend to eligible homebuyers on Native lands. The pilot program is administered under the Single Family Housing Direct Loan program, with the goal of expanding homeownership opportunities and improving housing conditions for Native Americans living in Tribal areas.
