Devastating Hailstorm Destroys Strawberry Fields at Michigan's Bentley Lake Farms

A sudden and unexpected summer hailstorm in Howell, Michigan has brought devastation to the fields of Bentley Lake Farms, leaving behind a trail of destruction in its wake. What was initially anticipated as much-needed rainfall turned into a disaster for the farm and its farmers.

Bentley Lake Farms, known for its diverse produce including fresh strawberries, tomatoes, sweet corn, cantaloupe, asparagus, and rhubarb, fell victim to the small but fierce hailstorm. The farm's 2.5-acre strawberry patch, just opened to the public for U-Pick on June 8, was completely destroyed by the hail, burying the newly grown fruits under piles of icy pellets.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the farmers expressed their initial joy at the rain and subsequent devastation caused by the hail. The storm abruptly ended their strawberry season, forcing them to close the U-Pick section for the remainder of the year.

Despite the loss, Bentley Lake Farms will continue operating at their other locations and farm market as they work on replanting the damaged fields. Their commitment to providing fresh, local produce to the community remains unwavering.

The storm's impact serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by farmers and their resilience in the face of adversity.

As the community rallies around Bentley Lake Farms during this difficult time, farmers across Michigan hope for more favorable conditions as they navigate the uncertainties of the growing season.
