MDARD Grants Support Michigan's Horticulture Industry

MDARD Grants Support Michigan's Horticulture Industry

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is extending a helping hand to Michigan's green industry. In an effort to support and enhance the state's nursery and ornamental horticulture businesses, MDARD has announced a grant opportunity for the 2024 Horticulture Fund.

The Horticulture Fund provides a platform for universities, colleges, and individuals to seek financial backing for their projects. The deadline for proposal submissions is November 22, 2023, with a maximum grant award of $20,000.

Who's eligible for this funding opportunity? All faculty and staff members of Michigan's universities and colleges, as well as teams of investigators, can apply. However, university or college personnel must serve as the Principal Investigator for the proposal.

The proposals are categorized into three distinct areas:

  • Applied Research: Focus on crop management systems that improve industry profitability while being environmentally responsible.
  • Basic Research: Generate knowledge to address current issues and develop better techniques and processes for the future.
  • Outreach/Training/Demonstration: Activities aimed at assisting Michigan's nursery and ornamental horticultural industries.

For those interested, proposals must be sent via email to MDARD-NurseryCE@Michigan.gov by November 22, 2023. Detailed guidelines and applications are available online.

The Horticulture Fund Advisory Committee, appointed by MDARD's Director, will review the proposals, with grant recipients expected to be announced in May 2024.

This funding initiative is a testament to MDARD's commitment to fostering growth and sustainability within Michigan's green industry. It's an opportunity to nurture innovation and contribute to the flourishing horticulture sector in the state.
