Monitoring Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) Resistance in Soybeans

Monitoring Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) Resistance in Soybeans

The soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is a silent yet ruthless adversary to soybean crops across North America. When it comes to yield loss, it outperforms all other soybean diseases. In Michigan alone, SCN leaves a trail of devastation in its wake, annually causing economic losses exceeding $40 million, making it the most destructive soybean pathogen.

SCN, scientifically known as Heterodera glycines, is a minuscule roundworm that resides in the soil, feasting on soybean roots. It can slash soybean yields by up to 50% and render soybeans more susceptible to other diseases.

Managing SCN involves several strategies, with one crucial approach being the monitoring of nematode resistance in soybeans. This can be accomplished by collecting soil samples and subjecting them to SCN testing. Additionally, you can keep an eye out for telltale signs of SCN damage in your soybean plants, such as stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and undersized pods.

If you discover that your soybean crop exhibits resistance to SCN, it's essential to take preventive measures to curb the nematode's spread. This includes crop rotation, opting for SCN-resistant soybean varieties, and employing nematicides.

On September 14, 2023, the Michigan State University Extension Field Crops Virtual Breakfast series will host a presentation on monitoring nematode resistance in soybeans. This informative session will be conducted by Marisol Quintanilla, an applied nematologist at MSU.

The presentation will delve into the following topics:

• Understanding SCN: Unveiling the enigmatic soybean cyst nematode.

• SCN's Devastation: How SCN inflicts damage on soybean crops.

• Soil Sampling for SCN: Techniques for testing soil samples to detect SCN.

• Identifying SCN Damage: Recognizing signs of SCN-induced harm in soybean plants.

• Managing SCN Resistance: Effective strategies to protect soybean yields from SCN.

Mark your calendars for this enlightening presentation, scheduled from 7:00 to 8:00 AM EDT on Zoom. To secure your spot, simply register on the Field Crops Virtual Breakfast website.

This presentation is not only free but also open to a diverse audience, including farmers, agribusiness professionals, and anyone intrigued by the intricacies of SCN and its management.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to fortify your knowledge about SCN and empower yourself with effective strategies to shield your soybean crops from this relentless adversary.
