New Agriculture Program for Central Michigan High School Students

New Agriculture Program for Central Michigan High School Students

By Andi Anderson

Central Michigan's high school students now have a closer-to-home option for pursuing their agricultural dreams. Mid Michigan College, situated just north of Clare, introduces a specialized agriculture program. Designed for students who prefer not to trek to East Lansing for an associate degree in farm management or agribusiness, this program opens doors to a variety of opportunities.

With about 922,900 agriculture and farm managers in the United States and approximately 88,800 expected job openings in the next decade, this program is timely and vital for students seeking diverse career paths in agriculture. Moreover, with a focus on agribusiness, it empowers students to manage their own farms or oversee others' operations.

The program encompasses 13 courses, including animal science, crop and soil management, and water conservation. It doesn't stop at theory—students gain practical experience through internships and field trips to local farms.

In 2022-23, the program drew 40 students, with 30 enrolled this year. For those aiming for higher education, transfer-focused options are available, allowing students to seamlessly transition to universities like Michigan State.

The program fills a significant gap for students who prefer the community college experience. As it addresses the need for skilled workers in the agricultural industry, it also ensures local students have access to valuable educational opportunities close to home.

If you're a Central Michigan high school student passionate about agriculture, reach out to Mid Michigan College and explore your path in agribusiness or farm management. The future of agriculture is closer than you think.
