The Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development, along with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), has announced the annual review period for the proposed drafts of the 2025 Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs). This is an opportunity for the public to share their views and suggestions.
Comments on the proposed GAAMPs will be accepted via email, U.S. mail, and during a virtual public meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. on August 29, 2024. This review process is a critical component of ensuring that agricultural practices remain effective and up-to-date.
Each year, GAAMPs are reviewed by committees composed of various experts who revise and update the practices as necessary. Any proposed changes to the GAAMPs are then reviewed and approved by the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The eight GAAMPs open for public comment include:
- Manure Management and Utilization
- Care of Farm Animals
- Site Selection and Odor Control for New and Expanding Livestock Facilities
- Farm Markets
- Pesticide Utilization and Pest Control
- Nutrient Utilization
- Cranberry Production
- Irrigation Water Use
MDARD will forward all comments received by the due date to the respective GAAMPs Task Force Committee Chairpersons for consideration before the final review.
The updated GAAMPs will be presented to the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development at their regularly scheduled meeting on September 11, 2024.
This review process ensures that the agricultural practices followed in Michigan are both scientifically sound and practically applicable.
Public participation is crucial in this process, as it brings diverse perspectives and local knowledge to the table, helping to refine and improve the practices.
To submit your comments or for more information, you can visit the MDARD website or attend the virtual public meeting on August 29, 2024. Your feedback will help shape the future of agricultural management in Michigan, ensuring sustainable and effective practices for years to come.
