Michigan apple exports surge by 40 percent since 2020

The Michigan apple industry has experienced a significant increase in exports since 2020, with bushels shipped rising by 40 percent, according to the U.S. Apple Export Council (USAEC).

This remarkable growth highlights the resilience of Michigan’s apple growers and the strategic efforts of the USAEC.

“Michigan’s surge in apple exports is a testament to our growers’ resilience and the strategic efforts of the U.S. Apple Export Council. In a challenging domestic market, this growth not only supports our local economy but also strengthens our global presence and opens new opportunities for the future,” said Kari Soldaat, Chair of USAEC and Director of Sales for Riveridge Produce Marketing, Inc.

The USAEC, a not-for-profit trade association, represents apple producers from five states: California, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Since its founding in 1993, USAEC has actively promoted U.S. apples in international markets, seeking new opportunities to expand exports on behalf of its member states.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan apple exports dropped to 6,090 bushels in 2021. However, in 2023, Michigan exported 147,917 bushels to markets including Canada, Central America, Colombia, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean, generating a value of $3,137,000 for the industry.

Diane Smith, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee and USAEC board member, emphasized the importance of accessing new and existing export markets. “As Michigan continues to produce larger crops, our work to access new and existing export markets across the globe continues to be imperative. The COVID pandemic severely impacted exports and reduced opportunities to move apples outside our borders. Our industry is fortunate to see this significant increase thanks to the efforts of the US Apple Export Council and Michigan’s apple export companies,” said Smith.

In total, the five state members of the USAEC collectively brought in nearly $13,000,000 through exports, moving 534,453 bushels of apples into global markets. This substantial contribution underscores the critical role of exports in supporting the local economy and enhancing the global presence of U.S. apples.

The ongoing efforts to expand apple exports continue to provide significant economic benefits and new opportunities for Michigan’s apple growers and the broader agricultural industry.
