House Committee Supports Whole Milk in School Meals

House Committee Supports Whole Milk in School Meals

By Jamie Martin

The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act has moved forward with approval from the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Passed by a 24-10 vote, the bill allows whole (3.25%) and reduced-fat (2%) milk back into school cafeterias, reversing a decade-long ban.

International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) president Michael Dykes welcomed the decision, stating -
"Today’s strong, bipartisan passage of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act in the House Committee on Education and the Workforce demonstrates the widespread support the bill enjoys in Congress, and among parents, nutritionists and school meals professionals alike."

The removal of whole and 2% milk from school menus led to lower milk consumption among students. Studies show that 68% to 94% of school-age children do not meet recommended daily intake, leading to concerns about missing essential nutrients.

Recent research supports the inclusion of full-fat dairy in diets, showing that whole and 2% milk have neutral or positive effects on health. Studies indicate that they do not contribute to weight gain and may reduce the risk of heart disease and childhood obesity.

The bill is backed by 100 legislators and health professionals who recognize the importance of dairy in child development. Advocates are calling for the full House and Senate to pass the act, ensuring that students receive key nutrients for growth and health.
