Michigan partners with Tannenbaum to support troops

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), along with representatives from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, participated in a Trees for Troops event at Tannenbaum Farms in Mason. This initiative provides free Christmas trees to U.S. armed forces members and their families.

"I'm honored to give back to the brave men and women who serve our country," said MDARD Director Tim Boring. "Michigan's agriculture sector is a vital part of our holiday traditions, and the Trees for Troops program allows us to express our gratitude to our military personnel while showcasing our state's outstanding agricultural products."

Brigadier General Scott House of the Michigan National Guard praised the program's impact on military families. "Trees for Troops is a wonderful gesture that brings holiday cheer to service members and their loved ones across the country," he remarked. "The dedication of volunteers and staff who ensure these Michigan trees reach military families in time for the holidays is truly inspiring."

Tannenbaum Farms, owned and operated by Dr. Mel and Laurie Koelling, has been cultivating beautiful Christmas trees for over four decades. Purchasing a real Christmas tree has become a cherished tradition for many families in the region. Dr. Koelling, a nationally recognized expert in the industry, served as a professor and researcher in the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University for over 35 years. The farm's first planting in 1978 covered three acres; today, plantings encompass approximately 100 acres of the 180-acre property.

Throughout 2023, MDARD will engage with Michigan's food and agricultural businesses to explore strategies for their continued success and identify ways the department can support their growth and expansion.
