41st Great Lakes International Draft Horse Show Opens
Michigan Ag Connection - 10/13/2017

The Michigan Great Lakes International (MGLI) Draft Horse Show and Pull opened to fanfare on Thursday at 8 a.m. It runs through Sunday at the Michigan State University Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, 4301 Farm Lane, East Lansing.

This year over 1,200 draft horses from the U.S. and Canada, and upwards of 50,000 spectators will attend. The show and pull features first-class draft horses including Belgians, Clydesdales, Shires, Percherons all performing in the arena or in the field. MGLI is the only event in the world to feature halter classes, hitching, plowing, pulling and riding for draft horse breeds and mules at the same time and location. The horses can weigh over a ton and compete in single horse hitch through the entire range of eight-horse hitch classes.

"These animals inspire all of us with their strength and gentle nature," said Aaron Rice, MGLI president. "This event gives guests and competitors alike a reprieve from reality and a chance to dream big!"

This year, in cooperation with the Ohio and Indiana state fairs, the MGLI is hosting the finals of the new Unicorn Series with a minimum payout of $3,000. Competitors must have participated in their Ohio and Indiana State Fair Breed Unicorn Classes as well as the MGLI Breed Unicorn Class to enter.

Additionally, MGLI will be recognizing the top five Michigan Bred and Owned draft horses in the Belgian, Percheron and Clydesdale/Shire and Special Shire Halter classes for foals, yearlings and two-year olds.

The show is open from 7:30 a.m. on Friday through Sunday, and closes each day, except Sunday, after the 7 p.m. barn yard pull. On Sunday, arrive before to see any action.
