The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) has announced Ashley Kennedy as the 2024 Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperator (OYDC). Kennedy and her husband, Eric, operate Sheridan Dairy LLC, a third-generation farm located in Bad Axe, Michigan.
The farm, established in 1962, milks 240 Jersey and Holstein cows and manages 280 acres, continuing a legacy of high-quality dairy production in their community.
As the OYDC winner, Kennedy will represent MMPA at various industry events, showcasing her commitment to dairy farming and leadership.
“The mission of Sheridan Dairy is to continue our family farm legacy by embracing the highest quality care for our cows, land, employees, and environment,” said Kennedy. She emphasized the farm’s focus on diversity, innovation, and creating opportunities for future generations.
Jake Buning of Falmouth, Michigan, was named the 2024 runner-up. Buning manages 760 cows and 1,600 acres on his family farm.
The selection process for OYDC involves evaluating applicants based on their farming operations, community involvement, and leadership skills, with the goal of identifying future dairy industry leaders.
MMPA Board Chairman Doug Chapin highlighted the importance of the OYDC program in encouraging young dairy farmers to engage with their cooperative and develop leadership skills.
Established in 1950, the program aims to strengthen leadership abilities, broaden knowledge of milk marketing, and recognize the efforts of young farmers like the Kennedys and Buning.
The 2024 OYDC finalists include Zach Steiner of Creston, Ohio; Ross and Markel Williams of Homer, Michigan; Ty and Tammy Spicher of Paw Paw, Michigan; David Krafft of Frankenmuth, Michigan; and Erich Lautner of Traverse City, Michigan.
The program celebrates the dedication and hard work of young dairy farmers who contribute significantly to their communities and the dairy industry.
