Celebrating Bill Erwin - A Lifetime of Excellence in Michigan Farming

By Andi Anderson

Bill Erwin, recognized for his lifelong dedication to farming, was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the Michigan State Horticultural Society in 2023. Erwin's journey in agriculture began at the age of 11, working on the family farm. Despite an early setback where his grandpa fired him after just three days, Erwin's father encouraged him to persist in farming.

Decades later, in December 2023, Bill Erwin received the Distinguished Service Award at the 2023 Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable, and Farm Market EXPO banquet. The award acknowledges Erwin's significant contributions to the fruit industry, highlighting his leadership, willingness to take on responsibilities, and active involvement in various boards and organizations.

Bob Tritten, retired fruit educator for MSU Extension, emphasized Erwin's pivotal role in advancing the fruit industry. Tritten commended Erwin for his leadership and his crucial support of Michigan State University's research and Extension efforts.

Erwin Orchards, located in South Lyons, concluded its operations in 2022 after 102 years in business. The majority of the orchard's produce was distributed to Detroit's Eastern Market. Despite the closure, Erwin remains highly regarded as one of the state's accomplished growers. Notably, he was an early adopter of dwarf fruit trees and pick-your-own activities, showcasing his innovative approach to farming.

Jim Goldstein of Hy's Cider Mill in Bruce Township commended Erwin's leadership in dealing with issues related to pesticides, pests, and fungicide, a crucial aspect of the industry. Goldstein emphasized that Erwin's expertise in these areas was instrumental, as successful cultivation is fundamental to successful sales in the agricultural sector.
