E15 Sales Poised for Year-Round Availability in Midwest

E15 Sales Poised for Year-Round Availability in Midwest

By Andi Anderson

Midwestern drivers could soon witness a groundbreaking change as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) moves closer to permitting year-round sales of E15 fuel in eight states.

In response to a 2022 petition from governors advocating for year-round E15 access, the EPA has advanced the proposal to the Office of Management and Budget. Historically restricted from sale during summer months, this request aims to enable uninterrupted availability of E15 fuel.

Notably absent from the group of petitioning governors was Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Ag and biofuels sectors, long proponents of year-round E15 sales, enthusiastically welcomed the EPA's move. The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) labeled the existing regulations as "outdated," emphasizing the role of year-round E15 access in meeting the ambitious climate objectives set by the Biden administration.

NCGA President Harold Wolle praised the decision, highlighting the critical impact of allowing consumers to access higher ethanol blends year-round.

According to a study by Growth Energy, nationwide E15 access could yield significant benefits, potentially saving drivers over $20 billion in annual fuel expenses, generating 188,000 new jobs, and injecting more than $66 billion into the U.S. economy.

Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy, emphasized the importance of expanding E15 sales for achieving climate targets, stressing that E15 is compatible with 96% of cars on the road today. Skor urged President Biden to promptly approve nationwide year-round E15 sales, highlighting its role in accomplishing environmental objectives.

The proposed change holds significant potential for transforming fuel options, potentially reshaping the driving experience in the Midwest. For moe updates on the EPA's proposal and the future of E15 fuel, stay tuned for developments.
