Ag Retailers Encouraged to Explore AI for Growth and Efficiency

Ag Retailers Encouraged to Explore AI for Growth and Efficiency

By Andi Anderson

According to a recent report by CoBank, ag retailers who delay exploring artificial intelligence (AI) may be missing valuable opportunities for operational improvements and business growth.

AI tools now support not only general business operations but also specific tasks in agronomy and field services.

Jacqui Fatka, CoBank’s farm supply and biofuels economist, said AI can be used across a company—from back office to customer-facing roles and supply chain management. She encouraged ag retailers to begin with simple tools, such as AI-powered email assistants or meeting summarizers like CoPilot, to ease staff into the technology.

“These low-risk tools can deliver fast benefits by summarizing customer conversations or organizing meeting notes, which can boost internal efficiency,” Fatka noted. From there, companies can gradually expand AI use in areas like accounting, sales, operations, and human resources.

Fatka emphasized the importance of selecting AI partners who understand agriculture and can provide value beyond just financial returns. Early adoption, paired with thoughtful partnerships, can give businesses a competitive edge in the long run.

While AI won’t replace agricultural retail jobs, it can reduce repetitive tasks, limit human error, and support continuity during staff changes. For example, AI applications like AgPilot allow agronomists to verbally input data on the go, offering crop protection advice and moving sales processes forward—even while traveling.

Fatka advised businesses to establish data privacy standards when implementing AI and to be aware of changes in regulations concerning customer information.

“The cost of testing AI tools is minimal,” she said. “Retailers operating with tight margins should not overlook the potential benefits AI can provide.”

CoBank recommends starting small, learning as you go, and keeping long-term goals in mind. With smart use, AI can help ag retailers improve productivity and stay competitive in a rapidly changing industry.
