AgroExpo and AgroLiquid unveiled the winners of their annual FFA Crop Management Challenge, a competition held in St. Johns that highlights the agronomy prowess of FFA students.
Participants engaged in a competition demonstrating their agronomic expertise by making critical decisions in corn or soybean demonstration plots. From selecting tillage practices to managing crop fertility inputs, students were responsible for every decision-making aspect.
This year, ten FFA chapters from Michigan took part in the fifth annual contest. Winners of the first place will be awarded a plaque, a traveling trophy, and $1,000. Second and third-place winners will receive plaques along with $500 and $250, respectively.
Troy Bancroft, Chairman of the Board at AgroLiquid, emphasized, "The competition provides students with the chance to research, hypothesize, and witness the outcomes of their recommendations in a climate-sensitive environment."
Contestants were evaluated based on yield, economic decisions, and their responses during presentations to the judges.
Marnie Swartzendruber, AgroExpo Show Coordinator, highlighted, "This hands-on experience allows FFA students to comprehend the rationale behind crop management decisions, ultimately enhancing their understanding of agriculture."
The winners for 2023 in Corn and Soybean categories were recognized from various FFA chapters, showcasing their commitment to agricultural proficiency.
The FFA Crop Management Challenge was supported by several organizations, aiming to foster agricultural education and leadership among youth.
Award ceremonies for the students will take place at the 2024 Michigan State FFA Convention scheduled for February 28 to March 1, 2024.
