Public Input Opportunity for Michigan's Specialty Crop Block Grant Program

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has unveiled a valuable public input opportunity for Michigan's Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. MDARD recognizes the importance of involving the community to ensure practical program priorities and is encouraging individuals to share their insights and recommendations. To participate, simply email your comments to mda-grants@michigan.gov by 5 p.m. EDT on November 27, 2023.

MDARD's Specialty Crop Block Grant Program is committed to advancing the competitiveness of specialty crops, which include fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture. The program aims to support and enhance the state's specialty crop industry through various initiatives.

In the previous year, the funding priorities for this program encompassed a wide range of essential areas, including:

  • Market Enhancement: Promoting specialty crops to increase their presence and desirability in the market.
  • Market Expansion, Availability, and Access to Specialty Crops: Ensuring that specialty crops are more accessible to consumers and expanding their market reach.
  • Farm to Institution: Encouraging the use of specialty crops in institutional settings, benefiting both producers and consumers.
  • Research and Development Relevant to Specialty Crops: Supporting research that advances specialty crop production and innovation.
  • Plant Health & Pest Management: Addressing the challenges related to crop protection and health.
  • Farm Sustainability: Promoting sustainable farming practices within the specialty crop sector.
  • Training & Education: Addressing local, regional, and national challenges faced by specialty crop producers.
  • Enhancing Food Safety: Ensuring the safety and quality of specialty crop products.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Promoting practices that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.
