Celebrate Cherry Month with MICherrySlurp
Michigan Ag Connection - 02/13/2020

Did you know that Michigan ranks first in the nation in the production of Montmorency tart cherries, and 4th in the nation in production of sweet cherries? Those are just two of the many reasons to celebrate Michigan cherries. The Michigan Cherry Slurp is an event highlighting one of Michigan's most well-known agricultural products -- cherries!

The Michigan Cherry Slurp highlights a Cultivate Michigan winter featured food - dried and frozen cherries - and is part of National Cherry Month. The Cherry Slurp is intended to be a community event that builds relationships, knowledge and support for Michigan foods and agriculture. There are many ways to celebrate and enjoy.

Whether you slurp on Feb. 14, or anytime in February, register your event to be counted at http://bit.ly/MICherrySlurp20. See the event organizing toolkit for steps and tips that can help guide you toward organizing a fun and successful Michigan Cherry Slurp.

See Cultivate Michigan's Cherry Featured Food page for additional cherry materials and recipes at www.cultivatemichigan.org/news. Find Michigan cherry sources and information through Cultivate Michigan's Featured Food's Sourcing Guide!

Please be sure to take photos and share your events on social media with #MICherrySlurp. The event runs Feb. 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but there's no time limit on when to consume Michigan cherries.

On Valentines Day 2019, many Michigan institutions, including schools, early childhood programs, hospitals, universities, organizations, businesses, and individuals will celebrate the Michigan Cherry Slurp. Just like the Michigan Apple Crunch, this is a time to get creative and host events centered around Michigan cherries.

Last year, more than 350,000 people crunched into Michigan grown apples on the same day, celebrating Michigan agriculture and supporting Michigan farmers through the Apple Crunch. The Michigan Cherry Week is your opportunity to show Michigan Cherries some Valentine love.

Holding the Cherry Slurp on Valentine's Day offers the opportunity to move away from candy and toward cherries, one of our favorite homegrown superfoods. Check out the Farm to Freezer slurp kit for making smoothies, pass out individual dried cherry packs, bake wholesome cherry muffins, or create a cherry yogurt parfait. Use cherries throughout your menu.
